The book that made the deepest impression on me was A Long Walk Home by Judith Tebbutt (Faber £16.99).
The
story of her terrifying abduction and six-month imprisonment by Somali
pirates exerted a horrible fascination. For a long time afterwards I
couldn’t get images from the story out of my mind - always wondering if I
could have shown the author’s courage and endurance. This well-written
book has the power of a thriller and the poignancy of the most moving
memoir.
Equally fascinating, in a very different way, was Otter Country by Miriam Darlington (Granta £20).
I love books about the natural world and warmed to this quest to
observe otters in their natural habitat. It was a reminder to slow
down . . . and watch.
