The Manchester United striker, who is his club’s leading striker in the division by some margin, now has three retired forwards and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard in his sights to become the Number One in its short history.
Lampard, who is not starting every league game at Chelsea now, is four ahead of his England colleague, which leaves just three legends of the art of scoring to overtake.
Charging to the top: Wayne Rooney's strikes against Spurs put him fifth in the all-time scorer list
On target: Rooney netted United's opener and rescued them a point from the penalty spot on Sunday
Only narrowly ahead of him by another 12 goals is former Newcastle United and Manchester United striker Andy Cole who added to his tally at Blackburn Rovers and finished his career with 187 goals.
If he can overtake that trio – and why not before the end of the season – Rooney then has a rush on before retirement to catch up with the greatest striker in the Premier League era.
Legends: Alan Shearer (left) and Thierry Henry are ahead of Rooney in the all-time Premier League scorers list
On the tail: Just above Rooney is Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, who has netted 168 goals
The majority – 148 in all – were scored in his beloved Newcastle Number Nine shirt, and yet Shearer missed almost an entire season under Kenny Dalglish in only his second year at St James’s Park.
He scored his other goals leading Blackburn to the title under Dalglish.
Onion bag: Andy Cole is one of the Premier League's top marksmen with 187 strikes
His brace at White Hart Lane took him ahead of Shearer and he is now one short of reaching a century and a half of goals in United goals.
Henry tops that list with his 175 goals for Arsenal and Rooney still needs another 26 to catch him up in that particular category.
Rooney's most prolific seasons were in 2009-10 and 2011-12, netting 34 in all competitions in both seasons. With his double at Spurs adding numbers nine and ten to his tally for this campaign, the England man is on course to put this year up there with his best.
Head and shoulders above: Rooney will have to go some to top his best-ever season in 2009 (above)
